Contact with VT's Residence Life Department

This morning I contacted the residence life department at VT. I wanted to make sure our efforts were okay with them. Sometimes it's good to make sure that what you think is "helpful" really is actually helpful. I also just wanted to give them a head's-up. With all they have going on, the last thing they need is a bunch of mysterious boxes showing up. Anyway, my conversation began with a wonderful administrative assistant (Shawn Shumaker) and culminated with this lovely email from Gail Kirby...VT's Interim Director of Residence Life. I just wanted to share her words with all of you:

Dear Emily-
I don't have the words to convey how meaningful your efforts are to me and my staff right now. At times like this, "6 degrees" is truly at work. I met with almost all of the student staff this evening and was able to convey with them the outpouring of support and care that we have been receiving on their behalf. It was incredibly helpful to them. Please share my thanks with your colleagues and know that we appreciate you.

Warm regards,
Gail Kirby
Interim Director of Residence Life

While I cannot support you financially right now (public high school teacher getting divorced and moving), I am praying for you. I was an RA at a great Midwestern university in the '90's, where I dealt with student crises so severe that I had to leave the job to save my grades and sanity. But it gave me my love of teenagers which carries me today. I immediately thought of all VT's RA's when I heard about the tragedy. Being an RA shouldn't cost you this much, but then, neither should being a teacher...or a student. -Alley '97
